Due to issues related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, budget constraints, and the extra workload caused by federal stimulus measures, Treasury Department officials are warning there could be delays in issuing tax refunds.
According to the
Washington Post, officials revealed the Internal Revenue Service will face “enormous challenges” during this year’s filing season and are urging taxpayers to file as early as possible, preferably online by creating an account at IRS.gov.
The
Washington Post reports approximately 90 percent of taxpayers file their taxes electronically, but roughly 10 percent still mail a paper copy and that, Treasury Officials say, causes the most delays.
“In many areas, we are unable to deliver the amount of service and enforcement that our taxpayers and tax system deserves and needs. This is frustrating for taxpayers, for IRS employees and for me,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement reported by
FOX News.“IRS employees want to do more, and we will continue in 2022 to do everything possible with the resources available to us.”
The deadline to file taxes this year is April 18 instead of the usual deadline of April 15 due to Emancipation Day being observed in Washington D.C.
