Crowds gathered in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C., for the 35th annual High Heel Race on Tuesday night.
The event takes place on the Tuesday before Halloween each year, and features a costume parade on 17th Street before the quarter-mile sprint in high heels.
A video shared by Makese Motley shows the costumed runners lined up ahead of the race, with eventual winner John Kim seen at the front of the pack in a yellow skirt and black tank top. Kim won the race for the second year in a row.
The costumes on display include Ursula from “The Little Mermaid,” pirates, nuns, “Squid Game” enforcers, and a flock of Marilyn Monroes.
The event, known for celebrating the citys LGBTQ community, began in 1986 when about 25 drag queens ran from JRs Bar and Grill up the street in their heels to the gay-friendly Annies Steakhouse.
Since then, the High Heel Race has grown to include hundreds of participants and thousands of spectators.
